Ever wondered, how is the USA a superpower? Superpower is a word used to describe a country with a dominant position in international relations. In other words, a country that has the capacity to project dominating power and influence any country in the world. For becoming a superpower the USA had to face many problems like recession and civil war in the past. How is the USA a superpower?: The story of becoming the greatest economies in the World

During the 1800s, the USA gained much more land in the West and began to become industrialized. During mid-century several states in the South left the US to start a new country causing the American Civil War. Some Americans became very rich in this Gilded Age and the country developed one of the largest economies in the world.

Foreign Trade

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the US became more active in foreign affairs. After fighting a war against Spain called the Spanish-American War, USA gained Puerto, Rico, Guam, Guantanamo and the Philippines. Combined with the purchase of Alaska and the taking over of Hawaii, the United States had gained all the territory it has today. Around this time, the US and European nations opened up trade with China. This was because they had beaten China in the Opium Wars and the Boxer Rebellion. The US and Europe were able to trade with China through the Open Door Policy.

Consequences of the wars

In the early 20th century, the USA became a world power, fighting in World War I and World War II. Between the wars, there was an economic boom called the Roaring Twenties. People became richer because wars created a lot of jobs for the people and ended the great depression.

It took less than a century for America to gain financial power and now it is a superpower. Now the US is the largest spender on the military making the US the most powerful nation.
