SEINFELD
IMDB RATING: 8.9/10
Next up is one of the top rated sitcoms of all time Seinfeld, often described as “a show about nothing” with the motto “no hugging, no learning”. It originally ran for nine seasons on NBC, from 1989 to 1998, created by Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld, the latter starring as a fictionalized version of himself. It is set predominantly in an apartment building in Manhattan’s Upper West Side in New York City.
In addition, the show features Jerry’s friends and acquaintances, particularly best friend George Costanza played by Jason Alexander, former girlfriend Elaine Benes acted by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and a neighbor across the hall Cosmo Kramer played by Michael Richards.
Most noteworthy, many of its episodes are about the minutiae of daily life. Seinfeld was part of a trend for US stand-ups taking their persona from stage to screen.
THE OFFICE
IMDB RATING: 8.8/10
Especially relevant, the sitcom is filmed in a single-camera setup without a studio audience or a laugh track to simulate the look of an actual documentary. The series depicts the everyday lives of office employees in the Scranton, Pennsylvania, branch of the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. The show debuted on NBC as a mid-season replacement and ran for nine seasons and 201 episodes.
The Office initially featured Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer and B. J. Novak as the main cast; aired on NBC from March 24, 2005, to May 16, 2013. It is an adaptation of the BBC series of the same name. It is said to have the perfect combination of hilarious comedy and connection with the characters.
Whether it be from a perfectly written and performed joke or an incredibly sentimental performance, which all characters are capable of, they also do a wonderful job of making “the little things” like a co-worker relationship seem so monumental.
