World’s First City-wide Google WiFi Network To Be Set In Pune Or “Wifi Pune”

Google has collaborated with IBM, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and RailTel for World’s first city-wide WiFi. Pune will soon be called Wifi Pune.

 

Google has received a Rs. 150 crore project for establishing high-speed internet hotspots across Pune, India. Pune Smart City Development Corporation Limited is associating with Google for World’s first city-wide WiFi network, Wifi Pune. The expenses include revenue sharing, capital and operating charges.

Pune Municipal Commissioner said, “The plan is to integrate all public places on a single platform to aggregate Wi-Fi hotspots that will allow access with one-time authentication.” Moreover, “The company will also set up emergency call boxes and public address systems, environmental sensors, variable messaging displays, network connectivity and video analytics integration.”

Google will help devise the WiFi network that will be set across the city. Furthermore, it will make the WiFi Pune network self-sustainable by deploying Google station platform. Additionally, RailTel will use lat-mile fibre connectivity to set up WiFi hotspots at 200 locations. Larsen and Toubro will help in the integration of the entire system. And IBM will act as a backbone during this project.

Consequently, people will be able to use WiFi services at all public places. These will include malls, restaurants, colleges etc.

Google may also be working with RailTel and L&T for Variable Message Data. This will help in transferring of important data across 161 areas in Pune.

Additionally, Google has been working with RailTel for setting up WiFi at 400 railway stations across India. However, only 100 stations across the country are availing the services.

Seems like the future is already here. If it works out, it is going to be a proud moment for our country. Moreover, Pune being the first city would receive a lot of visitors and residents.
