(Agreements Between India And Spain) Spain is India’s 7th largest trading partner in the European Union. Bilateral trade between both the nations has totalled USD 5.27 billion in 2016. In 1956, the opening of the Spanish embassy in New Delhi established the diplomatic relations between India and Spain. During PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Spain in 2017, India and Spain signed seven agreements, decided to widen defence ties and vowed to strengthen their cooperation in the fight against terrorism. Modi is the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Spain since 1988. Moreover, he persuades Spanish defence, infrastructure, energy and tourism companies to invest in priority sectors in India.
Here are the 7 Agreements Between India And Spain:
1. Agreement for Transfer of Sentenced Persons
Under this agreement, the two countries i.e. India and Spain will exchange sentenced prisoners in each other’s jurisdiction. According to the data available, the highest number of Indian prisoners (1,696) is in the jails of Saudi Arabia. However, there are 52 Indian prisoners in Spain so; the agreement will mostly apply to India. This agreement will add to the existing framework of institutional cooperation between the two countries.
2. MOU on Cooperation in Organ Transplantation
The National Transplant Organization, Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality in Spain and the Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in India signed this Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on 24th May 2017. This agreement strengthens the bilateral cooperation between India and Spain and helps the patients suffering from last stage organ failure.
3. MOU on Cooperation in Cyber Security
Under this agreement, the two countries discussed the recent cyberspace challenges. Also, they committed for further communication, both bilaterally and through a closer coordination in the international conference.
4. MOU on Cooperation in Renewable Energy
Under this agreement, both heads of the government considered the central role of energy and energy management in providing a stable environment which leads to development and growth. Moreover, Prime Minister Modi appreciated the global reputation of Spanish renewable energy companies. Additionally, he called for further participation of Spanish renewable energy companies in India in support of India’s ambitious renewable energy programme to achieve 175 GW of renewable power by 2022.
5. MOU on Technical Cooperation in Civil Aviation
This Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) marks a major achievement in the civil aviation relations between India and Spain and has the potential to encourage greater trade, investment, tourism and cultural exchanges between the two countries. Moreover, they hope that the direct flights between the two Capitals will intensify the people-to-people exchanges, especially in the tourism and business sectors.
6. Agreement on visa waiver for holders of diplomatic passports
This includes the abolition of the visa requirement for holders of diplomatic passports between India and Spain. Furthermore, this agreement will facilitate visa-free travel for holders of diplomatic passport of one country while entering into, transiting through, exiting from or staying for up to 90 days in the territory of the other country.
7. MOU between Foreign Service Institute and Diplomatic Academy of Spain
This Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signifies the cooperation between the Diplomatic Academies of the two countries. Also, both heads of the government expressed their hope that this will enhance mutual understanding between the two Foreign Ministries.
