After a day of tight schedule in office, nothing can beat the joy of sitting together and watching Indian television shows. These have become so inherent in our routine that night is incomplete without watching it.
With new Indian TV shows coming every now and then, no matter what! the OLD is evergreen. With increasing TRPs and consumer view ability, the producers are bound to extend the series that has occupied a significant position in the routine of the family.
Let’s take a look into some of longest running Indian television shows, some of which might still be running
1. YEH RISHTA KYA KEHLATA HAI
India’s longest running television series by episode count, with over 2444 episodes, YEH RISHTA KYA KEHLATA HAI, has beaten the records by even surpassing Balika Vadhu. The show is a typical Indian television drama, that premiered on July 12, 2009, and still running. These show is not only popular in India, but in Pakistan too. The show revolves around the daily happenings within the household of an Udaipur based Rajasthani family.
2. TAARAK MEHTA KA OOLTAH CHASHMAH
India’s longest running sitcom serial, TARAK MEHTA KA OOLTAH CHASHMAH, went on air in July 2008. Packed with a dose of humor, the show convulsed the viewers of all ages. With the number of episodes totaling to 2262, the show is still going on. On its new arrival in the Industry, the show had even beaten Balika Vadhu in 2010 to become the most watched show in India. Moreover, it has never lost pace, always been among the top 10 shows, sometimes even topping the charts.
3. BALIKA VADHU
Based on a simple theme of child marriage, BALIKA VADHU is an Indian soap opera that aired on Colors Tv. The first episode was aired on 21st July 2008 and was a major hit among the families (both in urban and rural). It traces the journey of the child bride from the brink of childhood to womanhood. The families and children actually grew watching these episodes. It had two seasons and was wrapped up airing its last episode on 31st July 2016, with the number of episodes totaling at 2248. It has been credited as the first fiction show to complete 2000 episodes.
4. CID (CRIME INVESTIGATION DEPARTMENT)
A renowned TV show, CID is an Indian detective television series about Maharashtra and Mumbai’s crime investigation department featuring on ‘Sony Entertainment Television India’. But, what has kept it going? It’s mainly the long-lasting bond that the characters share not only among themselves but also with the viewers including ACP Pradyuman, Salunkhe, Abhijeet, Daya that have kept the series going up till now. Airing every Saturday and Sundays @10:30 is the aptest time for all the families to sit together to watch this intriguing piece of investigation. First premiered in 1998 and has completed 19 years in January 2017, it’s still a tremendous on-going hit. The series aired its 1000th episode on 27th September 2013.
5. SAATH NIBHANA SAATHIYA
A Hindi-language Indian television drama, SAATH NIBHANA SAATHIYA first premiered on 3rd May 2010. The serial has been ranked 4th in the 2000 episodes’ chart list after Balika Vadhu, Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma. It completed 2184 episodes and went off-air on 23rd July 2017. It has been no.1 show on Star Plus and the 4th longest running Indian soap opera. The show revolves around the Gujarati joint family in Rajkot’s mansion and in exploring their customs, morals and family values.
6. MTV ROADIES
Airing since 2003 on MTV India, ROADIES is the most popular youth-based reality television show. Having completed 15 seasons, the show is still airing. With judges changing every year, contestants loosing-winning every year, the show has not lost its Pagal Pan(craziness) among the youth. Contestants from pan-India participate in this battle for survival. With a 14 year history, it is one of India’s longest running shows.
7. BIGG BOSS
A television reality show, BIGG BOSS is one of the most popular reality TV series in India. Within a span of 11 years, BIGG BOSS has rolled out 10 seasons. It is also rank amongst the longest running shows.
8. FIR
Aired on SAB TV from 31st July 2006, FIR is an Indian Television sitcom series produced by EDIT 2 Productions. It aired its last episode on 23rd July with the number of episodes totalling to 1323. This situational comedy centres on how a Haryanvi female police officer along with her three subordinates solves the new cases coming their way. Every new episode is a new case.
