Let’s Talk Depression. Why hide it?

23

Most people have felt sad or depressed at times. Feeling depressed can be a normal reaction to a loss, life’s struggles or an injured self esteem. Unlike a gasping wound that is easily visible to all, attracting concern and action, Depression is largely hidden. It is not understood by many and the signs and symptoms may vary. To change this prevailing situation of getting deep into the mode of depression, we need to talk about it, understand what it is, who it affects and how to overcome it. Meanwhile WHO carried out the “Let’s talk Depression” campaign on this years World Health Day (takes place every year on 7th April). It calls attention to this serious public health concern and advocates for recognizing and addressing the disease.

CAUSES

Although scientists agree that depression is a brain disorder, the debate continues about its exact causes. Many factors may contribute to the onset of depression, including genetic characteristics, changes in hormone levels, certain medical illnesses, stress, grief or substance abuse. Any of these factors alone or in combination can bring out about the specific changes in the brain chemistry that lead to the many symptoms of many depression, bipolar disorder and related conditions.
